Acts of Commanding and Changing Obligations

چکیده
If we are to take the notion of speech act seriously, we must be able to treat speech acts as acts. In what follows, I will try to model changes brought about by various acts of commanding in terms of a variant of update logic. I will combine a multi-agent variant of the language of monadic deontic logic with a dynamic language to talk about the situations before and after the issuance of commands, and the commands that link those situations. Although the resulting logic inherits various inadequacies from monadic deontic logic, some interesting principles are captured and seen to be valid nonetheless. An outline of a proof of completeness and some interesting valid principles together with concrete examples will be presented.

Acts of Promising in Dynamified Deontic Logic
In this paper, the logic of acts of commanding ECL II introduced in Yamada (2007b) will be extended in order to model acts of promising together with acts of commanding. Effects of both kinds of acts are captured in terms, not of changes they bring about on propositional attitudes of their addressees, but of changes they bring about on deontic status of relevant action alternatives; they are mo...
متن کاملLogical dynamics of some speech acts that affect obligations and preferences
. In this paper, illocutionary acts of commanding will be differentiated from perlocutionary acts that affect preferences of addressees in a new dynamic logic which combines the preference upgrades introduced by van Benthem and Liu in [vBLar] with deontic updates introduced by Yamada in [Yam07b]. The resulting logic will incorporate Austin’s distinction between illocutionary acts as act...
متن کاملActs of Requesting in Dynamic Logic of Knowledge and Obligation
Although it seems intuitively clear that acts of requesting are different from acts of commanding, it is not very easy to sate their differences precisely in dynamic terms. In this paper we show that it becomes possible to characterize, at least partially, the effects of acts of requesting and compare them with the effects of acts of commanding by combining dynamified deontic logic with epistem...

The holy Quran has put “calling people to do good deeds” [or calling people to an act of benevolence] besides and prior to “commanding rightand forbidding wrong”, [or commanding beneficence and forbidding maleficence]. However in many interpretive and jurisprudential books, no sufficient effort has been made to elaborate the difference features between these two and their results, whose manife...
